Hi....I'm in S.W. Lower Michigan.......near Kalamazoo.
My G'ma had south bedroom with eastern and southern windows in which I remember she had the best graniums growing and blossoming over the winter. I just try to keep some living and not getting too "leggie" in an unused bedroom that is unheated and has an eastern window. I have had "reasonable" results letting my plants hibernate with just a small amount of watering. This year I'm trying keeping some bare roots in the basement, which I know is a common way to winter plants. Anybody else like geraniums or have any special hints to pass along?? Right now I'm seeing some yellowing of some leaves on those in the bedroom. I don't know if they were still wet when I brought the pots in from outside.....we'd had a lot of rain.

This year I brought in only two geranium plants. They are both unusual varieties. I'm lucky to have lots of windows with a southern exposure, where I have great light all day. In the past, in a different home, I've done as you have, pinching the leggy stems back and attempting to root them.
I also brought cuttings in from my favorite plants. I've two pots with about 8 cuttings each that have definitely rooted.
I've successfully grown geraniums from seeds. I'd love to do now, but I no longer have the room. I have a geranium grower I found online that specializes in Alpines. Turns out they are a half hour drive from me. Hopefully, I will order rooted cuttings from them this year.
